—Remark on 《Son At the Same Age of China》
By Chuanbing Ma
Novels usually can describe the world with its thoroughly depiction, a piece of grain can mirror the world and a drop of water can reflect the shine of the sun, this novel just like the grain and the drop of water, the readers can see the great changes of China, since the founding of new China till today’s China. Any foreign friends who want to know China well, the novel will be very helpful to read China.
The novel is very realism, consists of four volumes, named 《Son At the Same Age of China》. The author Yuming Wei is a great writer who likes to write the realism works, with its thorough depiction he wants to tell the world what happened in China. Just like a skilled horseman who can ride horse and run wildly and also can walk very slowly, sometimes it is like the storm, and sometimes it is like the sunshine, the author is very skilled at describing the world. History is like a brook running before you, the events are the water flowers, which makes you very excited.
This novel described the stories happened in Anping city of North China, a heavy industrial city, about the dramatis personae who has the same age as the new China. The name of the book mirrored the thinking of the author, that is to say, the book is not only focusing on personal stories but also the stories of China.
The birth of the dramatis personae, Xinhua Zhu (which means Congratulations on birth of New China) was on the same day of new China’s founding,1st of October in 1949, this was very coincident, the cry of the baby has the character of that time, its fate has also direct connections with new China. It took the author’s more than one million words to write the four volumes, according to the development logic of new China’s history. The first volume focused on the 7 years story about the new China after its birth; the second volume focused on the 10 years happening of socialism building; the third volume focused on the 10 years’ Great Culture Revolution; the fourth volume focused on the changes during the Reform and Open period. The half-century’s great changes condensed into the small city, the small book, and the small part of the world. Very realism and also epic, desired to have a look.
In this novel, the guy who was at the same age of new China, acted as the main character, all the people who has some connections with him directed all the love and bitterness stories to him and also the surrounding people, mixed with the passion to the whole country, especially for Xinhua Zhu.
The dramatis personae Xinhua Zhu was also the mirror of the author, Yuming Wei, every novel reflects the author’s footprints, just like its own legend.
The depiction was very colorful, vivid, it emphasized on the heavy loss the dramatis personae has contributed in running for the idealism and perfection. Xinhua Zhu bared himself in Shanghai just in order to get the ordinary treatment; strived for the whole life to battle against Xiaoniu Lu, Chunxin Li, who represented the powerful sides who blocked him to enjoy the ordinary people’s treatment; his father, Guodong Zhu also lost too much in running for his own happiness; his stepmother, Yuezhu Han, devoted all her life to getting the perfect marriage; Jiayi Fang has to move abroad in order to escape something. All of these situations have told you the miserable stories at that time, and depicted the juvenility and the zigzag of the new China.
With further depiction, the characters’ stories have disclosed the new ear of China, both the success and some failures, including the pollution and the gangsterdom phenomena. That is the real China.
In all, the author described the half-century’s history with four volumes, he has devoted a lot to disclose what happened in China. It is a good work for Chinese people, and also a good novel for foreigners who want to know about China.
